Panama Bird Watching

Welcome to Panama, home to some of the best bird watching in the world! Whether you’re moving to Panama permanently or just visiting the country on vacation, Panama has over 950 species of birds, more than the United States and Canada combined. In addition to these indigenous populations, more than 120 species are migrants that regularly cross the country during their migration patterns.

Among birders, the annual “raptor migration” of various hawks and vultures is quite spectacular. At certain times of the year they pass overhead in flocks that number in the many thousands. In 2004 researchers tallied more than 2.7 million raptors, with one researcher counting more than 92,000 in a single day.

In addition to the raptors, impressive birds include several species of macaws, toucans and the quetzal, considered by many to be the most beautiful bird on the planet.

The opportunities for bird watching on the Azuero peninsula are virtually limitless. With hundreds of miles of coastline and a high mountain range, birds can be observed from several different ecosystems. Combine bird watching with horseback riding, and you just might end up having the adventure of a lifetime. All of the photos on this page were taken in and around Ocean Ridge Estates.

Bird watchers visiting the area will not be disappointed!
